How the Amazon FBA fee is calculated
The referral fee is a percentage of the total price the customer pays, including any shipping you charge, with a $0.30 minimum per item. Some categories are tiered: jewelry pays 20% on the first $250 and 5% above it; furniture pays 15% up to $200 and 10% above.
The fulfillment fee depends on the size tier. Amazon measures the packed unit; if the longest side is 15 inches or less, the next 12 or less, the shortest 0.75 or less and it weighs a pound or less, it is small standard. Up to 18×14×8 inches and 20 lb is large standard. For large standard, Amazon charges on the greater of the unit weight and dimensional weight (L×W×H ÷ 139, with the two shorter sides counted as at least 2 inches).
Rates also move with price: units under $10 get a lower fee, and units above $50 pay more. Since January 15, 2026 fees rose by an average of $0.08, and from April 17, 2026 a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge applies to every FBA fulfillment fee. October 15 to January 14 adds peak-season fees.

Why a Amazon FBA fee hurts more on cheap items
Drag the price. The percentage part of the fee stays the same, but any fixed charge is spread over fewer dollars, so the share of the sale you lose climbs as the price falls.
On a $10.00 sale Amazon FBA takes $6.79, which is 67.9% of the money.
Ways to keep more on Amazon FBA
- Shave the box. Dropping from 1.1 lb to 15 oz can move a flat item into small standard and save over a dollar a unit.
- Compare FBM. Turn on “I ship it myself” to see whether the fulfillment fee beats your own label cost plus packing time.
- Keep sell-through high. Long storage and low-inventory fees are the costs sellers most often forget.
Questions sellers ask
How much does Amazon take per sale?
Usually the referral fee (15% in most categories) plus the FBA fulfillment fee if Amazon ships it. On a $24.99 kitchen item weighing just over a pound, that is about $3.75 plus roughly $5, about 36% of the price before storage.
What is the FBA fuel surcharge?
Since April 17, 2026 Amazon adds 3.5% to FBA fulfillment fees in the US and Canada. It averages about $0.17 per unit and is included in our estimates.
Is the Individual or Professional plan cheaper?
Individual costs $0.99 per item sold; Professional costs $39.99 a month. Professional wins once you sell more than about 40 units a month.
Why is my fulfillment fee higher than expected?
Usually dimensional weight: a light but bulky box is billed as if it were heavier. Check the dimensions Amazon has on file in Seller Central.
Does the referral fee include shipping?
Yes. It is calculated on the total sales price, including any shipping or gift-wrap charges the customer pays.
