How the eBay fee is calculated
The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale. eBay defines that total as the item price plus any shipping and handling you charge plus the sales tax the buyer pays. Tax is collected and remitted by eBay, but the percentage is still calculated on it, which is why a $50 item can cost more in fees than 13.6% of $50.
On top of that comes a fixed per-order fee: $0.40 when the order total is over $10, $0.30 when it is $10 or less. Payment processing is already inside the final value fee; there is no separate PayPal charge on eBay sales.
Optional or conditional charges stack on the same total: a general Promoted Listings ad rate if the sale came through your ad, 1.65% if the buyer’s address is outside the US, and an extra 6 percentage points if your account falls to Below Standard. Top Rated Plus listings earn 10% off the final value fee.
That split works like a marginal tax rate: only the dollars past $7,500 get the lower 2.35%, never the whole sale. ahaboo animates that same slicing on a paycheck, which makes eBay’s tiers click too.
Why a eBay fee hurts more on cheap items
Drag the price. The percentage part of the fee stays the same, but any fixed charge is spread over fewer dollars, so the share of the sale you lose climbs as the price falls.
On a $10.00 sale eBay takes $1.66, which is 16.6% of the money.
Ways to keep more on eBay
- Price with tax in mind. At 7% sales tax, the true fee on most categories is about 14.6% of your item price, not 13.6%.
- Watch the ad rate. A 5% Promoted Listings rate adds $3.10 to a $50 sale with $8 shipping, because it is charged on shipping and tax too.
- Sneakers over $150 skip the per-order fee and pay 8%, one of the lowest rates on the site.
Questions sellers ask
How much does eBay take from a $100 sale?
For most categories with $10 shipping and 7% tax, the total is $117.70. The final value fee is 13.6% of that ($16.01) plus $0.40, so eBay takes $16.41 and you receive $93.59 before your own shipping cost.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the item price plus the shipping and handling the buyer pays, plus sales tax.
Is there still a separate PayPal fee on eBay?
No. Since managed payments, card and PayPal processing is included in the final value fee.
What is the eBay insertion fee?
Most private sellers get 250 zero-insertion-fee listings a month; after that each listing costs $0.35 per category. Store subscribers get more free listings. It is charged when you list, whether or not the item sells, so it is not included in the per-sale total above.
Do I get fees back if the buyer cancels or returns?
If you refund the full amount, eBay credits the final value fee except the fixed per-order fee. Partial refunds get a proportional credit.
