How the Etsy fee is calculated
When an item sells, Etsy charges the transaction fee on everything the buyer pays you for the item: the price, the shipping and any gift wrapping. Then Etsy Payments charges processing on the full order total, including the sales tax Etsy collects.
The $0.20 listing fee is charged when you publish, and again automatically each time a unit sells (so the listing stays up) or when the four-month listing renews. On a multi-quantity order each sold unit renews the listing.
Offsite Ads are only charged when a buyer clicks an Etsy ad on another site and buys within 30 days. Shops under $10,000 a year can opt out; above that they are enrolled at 12%.
Why a Etsy fee hurts more on cheap items
Drag the price. The percentage part of the fee stays the same, but any fixed charge is spread over fewer dollars, so the share of the sale you lose climbs as the price falls.
On a $10.00 sale Etsy takes $1.40, which is 14.0% of the money.
Ways to keep more on Etsy
- Price free shipping into the item, not as a discount: the 6.5% applies either way.
- Budget for Offsite Ads if you cannot opt out. A single 15% ad sale can wipe out the margin on a low-priced item.
- Bundle: processing’s $0.25 is per order, so a two-item order saves money over two separate sales.

How much does Etsy take from a $40 sale?
With $5 shipping and 7% tax: $0.20 listing, $2.93 transaction fee and $1.69 processing, a total of $4.82, so you receive $40.18 of the $45 before your costs.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee and the payment processing fee both include what the buyer pays for shipping.
Does Etsy charge fees on sales tax?
Payment processing is calculated on the order total including tax. The transaction fee is not charged on tax.
Can I turn off Etsy Offsite Ads?
Only if your shop made less than $10,000 in the past 12 months. Above that, participation is required and the fee drops to 12%.
Is there a monthly fee on Etsy?
No. Etsy Plus is an optional $10 a month subscription with listing credits and ad credits.
